History:

Once part of the Cherokee territory until the "Trail of Tears", the county was formed on December 3, 1832 by the Georgia Legislature and named for Revolutionary War patriot John Paulding.

Many Civil War sites are located in Paulding County, making it a popular vacation site for history buffs. A monument and memorial park stand at New Hope Church, describing events of the well known battle fought in 1864 between Generals Sherman and Johnston. Pickett's Mill Historic State Site is one of the best preserved battlefields in the nation. It is the site of the bloody 1864 battle between Generals Sherman and Howard at which Union troops trying to flank Confederate lines were turned away from Paulding County toward Kennesaw.

Named for George Mifflin Dallas, vice president under James K. Polk, Dallas has been the county seat since 1851. A ten acre park and expansion of the downtown area have resulted from its charm and downtown retail potential.

County Profile:

Paulding is one of 159 counties in Georgia. It is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA (MSA). Its 2005 population of 112,566 ranked 16th in the state.

PER CAPITA PERSONAL INCOME
In 2005 Paulding had a per capita personal income (PCPI) of $25,135. This PCPI ranked 57th in the state and was 81 percent of the state average, $30,914, and 73 percent of the national average, $34,471. The 2005 PCPI reflected an increase of 2.4 percent from 2004. The 2004-2005 state change was 4.3 percent and the national change was 4.2 percent. In 1995 the PCPI of Paulding was $18,026 and ranked 53rd in the state. The 1995-2005 average annual growth rate of PCPI was 3.4 percent. The average annual growth rate for the state was 3.6 percent and for the nation was 4.1 percent.

TOTAL PERSONAL INCOME
In 2005 Paulding had a total personal income (TPI) of $2,829,398*. This TPI ranked 19th in the state and accounted for 1.0 percent of the state total. In 1995 the TPI of Paulding was $1,063,230* and ranked 29th in the state. The 2005 TPI reflected an increase of 8.8 percent from 2004. The 2004-2005 state change was 6.6 percent and the national change was 5.2 percent. The 1995-2005 average annual growth rate of TPI was 10.3 percent. The average annual growth rate for the state was 5.9 percent and for the nation was 5.2 percent.

COMPONENTS OF TOTAL PERSONAL INCOME
Total personal income includes net earnings by place of residence; dividends, interest, and rent; and personal current transfer receipts received by the residents of Paulding. In 2005 net earnings accounted for 81.8 percent of TPI (compared with 81.1 in 1995); dividends, interest, and rent were 7.8 percent (compared with 9.4 in 1995); and personal current transfer receipts were 10.5 percent (compared with 9.4 in 1995). From 2004 to 2005 net earnings increased 7.7 percent; dividends, interest, and rent increased 7.8 percent; and personal current transfer receipts increased 18.6 percent. From 1995 to 2005 net earnings increased on average 10.4 percent each year; dividends, interest, and rent increased on average 8.1 percent; and personal current transfer receipts increased on average 11.4 percent.

EARNINGS BY PLACE OF WORK
Earnings of persons employed in Paulding increased from $716,763* in 2004 to $802,634* in 2005, an increase of 12.0 percent. The 2004-2005 state change was 6.3 percent and the national change was 5.6 percent. The average annual growth rate from the 1995 estimate of $256,689* to the 2005 estimate was 12.1 percent. The average annual growth rate for the state was 6.1 percent and for the nation was 5.5 percent.
